Mountain Climbers
Mountain Climbers
This is where the keyboard starts to make sense. The black keys aren’t random — they come in teams of 2 and teams of 3, and this pattern repeats across the entire piano. We call them ‘Mountain Climbers’ because your fingers climb up and down these little mountains. Once your child can see and feel this pattern, the keyboard transforms from confusing to organized.
This lesson also introduces finger numbers (1–5 on each hand) through the Climber activities. Your child will use fingers 2–3 for Team of 2 and fingers 2–3–4 for Team of 3.
What You’ll Learn
- Team of 2 — Find every group of 2 black keys. Climb up with fingers 2–3, climb down. Repeat across the whole keyboard
- Team of 3 — Find every group of 3 black keys. Climb up with fingers 2–3–4, climb down. The pattern alternates: 2, 3, 2, 3
- Finger Numbers — Thumb is 1, index is 2, middle is 3, ring is 4, pinky is 5 — same on both hands
- Eyes-Closed Challenge — Find Team of 2 and Team of 3 by touch alone. The piano becomes something you can navigate by feel
Practice Activity
Climber Relay: Start at the far left of the keyboard. Climb every Team of 2 going up, then back down. Then climb every Team of 3. See how fast you can go while keeping good bubble fingers. Race against yourself, not a timer — smooth and steady beats fast and sloppy every time.
This is one of the most important lessons in the whole course. Every white key note your child learns later will be found using these black key landmarks. If they can find Team of 2 and Team of 3 with their eyes closed, they have a permanent GPS for the keyboard. Spend extra time here if needed — it pays off enormously in Modules 3 and 4.
