Right Hand Songs
Finger Number Fun: Right Hand Songs
Your child has rhythm and finger numbers — now it’s time to play real songs with the right hand. This lesson starts with the Climber Says game (like Simon Says, but with finger numbers) to sharpen finger independence. Then we move to short, satisfying songs played on Team of 2 and Team of 3 black keys.
These aren’t exercises — they’re songs. Your child will hear a tune they can recognize and feel pride in playing. That feeling of ‘I did it!’ is the fuel for everything that comes next.
What You’ll Learn
- Climber Says — A finger number game: ‘Climber says play finger 3!’ — wiggle it, then play it. Builds finger independence through play
- Right Hand on Team of 2 — Short melodic patterns using fingers 2–3 on the group of 2 black keys
- Right Hand on Team of 3 — Slightly longer patterns using fingers 2–3–4 on the group of 3 black keys
- Ta & Ta-2 in Songs — Apply the rhythm values from Lesson 4 inside real musical pieces
Practice Activity
Climber Says Tournament: Take turns being the ‘Climber.’ Call out finger numbers and the other person plays them on black keys as fast as they can with their right hand. Start simple (‘Climber says finger 2!’) and get creative (‘Climber says finger 4, then finger 2!’). Then play through the lesson songs once more, saying the rhythm out loud.
This is the first lesson with real songs — celebrate it! Film your child playing. If they want to play a song five times for everyone in the house, let them. Joyful repetition is the best practice. Don’t correct small mistakes right now; just cheer. The confidence they build here carries them through harder material later.
